Like how a film critic can praise the objective merits of a movie even if they personally didn't like it, even if they also talk about that more subjective side. I personally enjoy it when I'm with the few friends who can actually have discussions about this type of stuff. Someone loves a band and will almost always take "I don't like that band" as "I am judging your taste in music and by necessary extention you as a person".Īnd so people's vehement defense of the merits of a band or book or whatever is largely based in a subconscious defense of their own honor so to speak. People tie their own self-worth to the things they like.
